Many military pilots learn to fly with night-vision goggles.
And a normally "daylight" orange smoke flare is effective at night, since the goggles the CG pilots use
at night pick up the heat.

The infrared illuminator is useful for close objects and is a refinement of the "Sniperscope" used at the end of WW2 and in Korea. We had similar devices on my M60 A1 tank, the M32 sight, but the tank also had a 10,000 watt infrared spotlight which could llight up an enemy tank at 2,000 meeters. The driver also had an infrared periscope and military vehicles all had infrared driving headlights. The attached photo of an M60A1 tank shows the infrared spotlight, it's the big box mounted above the main gun covered with  a protective cover, It also shows the two infrared headlights, the're the black lenses next to the clear lenses on each side of the front of the hull.
