There's been discussion recently on the HASTRO-L (history of astronomy) mailing list about whether the crescent shape of Venus can be discerned with the naked eye. I hope Geoffrey Kolbe won't mind if I retell, for Navlist readers, a delicious little story he posted to that list, as follows- "There is a story that when Gauss was a boy, he built a telescope and invited his mother to look at a crescent Venus through it. His mother duly obliged and then asked why it was upside down..."
