Re: Crescent Moon over 42nd Street NYC

Shades of ‘Rear Window’ here.  42nd Street lies 120°/200°.  Madam Tussauds is on the right, so we’re looking 120°.  A line though the Moon’s horns should point very, very, roughly south, so the Moon sits about right.  The Moon’s diameter is about ½° , so we must be on the NW side of the Hudson River such that the angle between the first buildings in 42nd St is also between ½° and 1°, call it 1°.  Therefore, the photographer must be standing 60 x distance between buildings on 42nd St on a bearing 200° from the first buildings.  Looking at Google Maps, I estimate the distance between buildings as 48m.  So, the photographer is 60x48=2880m on a bearing of 200° from the start of 42nd St West, give or take a km or so.  It's the telephoto lens trick which makes windmills as big as the Moon, etc, etc.  DaveP
