In east longitude just subtract the east longitude from 360 which makes it equivalent to west longitude. That is what you were doing with your method.

thenauticalalmanac method
GHA less than longitude is 173° 04' at 0630
long - GHA  = 2° 1.2'
I have solved the problem. The example given by thenauticalalmanac was for west long. I am in east long so the equation becomes long + GHA.  Similarly the  sign in "My Method" needs to be chosen depending on whether long is east or west.
