That'
a rather broad notion of copyright infringement. I guess it would not hold up in
court.
Apart
from that: One should not be mistaken about this group: Among e-mail lists (I
admit that I never managed one and only know a few) this list seems to
be rather peculiar: The members try to discuss problems of navigation and its
history on a scientific level - i.e. sticking to accepted standards of
arguments, methods and inter-subjectivity. But it is obviously not a
mailing list of scientists (although some members are) like "Rete" or "MapHist"
for instance. If you compare those lists you will see that there is hardly ever
a substantial discussion on these lists - except concerning problems like map
theft, photographing old maps, cataloguing etc. that I would not classify as
pertaining to the core science of the list. The reason for that is clear: if you
are a scientist earning your living by that you don't broadcast your findings on
the internet. (Anybody remembering the Sixties might also remember the Tom
Lehrer song about Lobachevsky:"Plagiarize").
This
is different here: Most members earn their living by some other occupation in
the daytime. So they are free to share their observations, inventions and
thoughts with other members who add their thoughts and objections. The only
risk you run is of making a fool of yourself or incurring the wrath of others
because you have trodded out your favourite war horse once too often.
So if
you are wary that a member is taking advantage of your findings: don't publish
them here. But you might lose the chance that someone else may contribute
something which might be of interest to and useful for you.
P.S.:
I ordered your book, as George "recommended" it. I would have never known about
it without the list.

Betreff: [NavList 3909] Copyright infringementYesterday Mike Daly issued the following statement on this list.......
"....we know an instrument was designed and we know Halley made accurate
measurements.....Mike Daly does NOT know Halley made accurate measurements (in the context of this debate .i.e at sea). George Huxtable knows because he has read my book and has always showed me the common courtesy of providing a reference. I am the first person ever to publish this information in "Astronomical Minds:the true longitude story", published September 2007, ISBN 9780955643903 and Daly is infringing that copyright by claiming he also knows this. He does not.Edward (Ted) Gerrard
