    Cook's death place
    From: Alexandre Eremenko
    Date: 2006 Oct 20, 14:50 -0400

    I recently visited the Karakakooa bay on
    the (Big) Hawaii island, where Cook was killed.
    You can see the photos in
    The North shore of the bay, where the landing occured, is not accessible
    from the land. One can rent a kayak
    (kayak.jpg) from the South shore (bay.jpg, PA100483.JPG;
    you can see the monument on the opposite shore
    if your screen has enough resolution).
    The death place is marked with a plate installed
    in the water (plate1.jpg, plate2.jpg,
    plate3.jpg). It is slightly above the water level
    during the low tide (plate4.jpg, kayak.jpg).
    There is also a white monument on the shore nearby
    (monument1.jpg, monument2.jpg), and several
    plates installed by various people and organizations
    near the white monuments (PA100474.JPG). The general views of
    the place
    are cook1.jpg, cook2.jpg and shore.jpg.
    There is a coral reef there with very clear water,
    so many people are diving (the rest of the pictures).
    The coordinates of the place (the anchor places of Resolution
    and Discovery
    are in the bay which is deep enough, close to the N shore; they are
    marked on
    one of the original maps of Cook's third expedition;
    copies of all maps are available at Purdue library), determined by
    Cook are 20d17'N, 156d00'W; comparison with Terraserver
    gives errors less than 1' in latitude and approx 6' in longitude.
    They used both chronometers and Lunars in the third voyage.
    P.S. You can also see a good view of the place from above
    on Google Earth.
