Thank you very much Norm. Very helpful and interesting. Cook's observations were done by emmersion or immersion from eclipse.The one I quoted used emmersion.The Nautical Almanacs 1767-69 I think only gave GMT for eclipses.
So far I have only done immersion of Io,but will try others.I do not have the equipement for photometry, but may try using a small digital camera on video but I quite like to replicate the Cook observations using equipment available to him.I 'll persevere with my current 4 inch refractor for a while.
On the subject of using high tech, has anyone thought of using image stablisers/gyro steadicams etc to try to observe these eclipses from a pitching boat? the 18th century "marine chairs" did not work, maybe this would?
