    Thanks for this, Hewitt. From another, offlist source (reproduced with permission) comes this:
     
    Bayless' Table is based on the following relationship,
                                  100000*log (1/sin x )
    Pepperday's Table is similar, viz,
                                  100*log (1/sin s)/log 11.4953
    (which I have derived empirically).
     Where x and s are the required angular values of the argument and
    all logs are to the base 10.
