Years ago I was surprised that some sailors actually checked there great circle courses by observing commercial jet conn trails. I never tried this technique because of the uncertainty of the observed aircrafts destination. A sailor could easily end up in Tokyo rather than Honolulu ;-)

This offers the sailor with internet access the ability to use a passing jet as a navigation aid. The sextant (or camera) can also be used to determine the range to the jet.
