> Would a modern pilot have any idea how to apply magnetic variation? The normal radionavigation beacons, VOR's, transmit a signal that, when received in the airplane, identify the bearing from the airplane to the beacon. These beacons are adjusted so the bearing is aligned with magnetic north, not true north, I believe. So, an aeronautical map tends to be covered with little compass roses, one at each of these beacons, and the airways between them are marked with the magnetic heading to follow. -- Bill
