    Greg,  In my private pilot days I only flew with a regular compass, but in a
    more ancient youth I often sailed with ol timers who only steered their
    vessel by points....ie ENE BY N or NNE by a quarter N and so on.  I never
    heard of the numbers until I sort of grew up some and steered using a gyro
    repeater. I guess it was when I actually left home and got to work on steel
    vessels at about age 15.
