    Compass Error
    From: Byron Franklin
    Date: 2013 May 8, 10:06 -0700

Byron: DO me and yourself a favor.
Check your compass in port or underway using
bearings of charted Navaids. Use my Franklin Piloting Technique and the chart. The Technique is in Bowditch
and many Navy books and schools .The technique is also
    at Navlist 2009 Aug.4 18:47-0700.
When in deep water the Amplitude is your next best when Lat is less than 50 degrees. (The lower the better).
The Azimuth Circle and the higher sun is good to check compass
but it is a delicate instrument that can give bad information,
at sea it is good to check the compass, but not reset. The Circle has cause
many compass to be set off true north in the ship yards.
Read my article on the USS Intrepid. If have not let me know to resend.
In port with a chart can give near to zero error
Franklin Piloting, next is the Amplitude, (low LaT best.)
Azimuth Circle to check the compass in deep waters.
Unless necessary do not use for reset.
I have found many ship compass in error after a reset at the yards would anyone want a reprint of the USS Intrepid after the yards?
