I was taught the old "two virgins make dull company, add whiskey" for TVMDC(AW). I would suggest that checking a compass at a pier or dock is not 'best practice' -- I think it was on this list I heard of the London City Airport magnetic anomalies set atop an old pier were extreme (OK for gyros, immune to magnetism) For the record, the best way to throw off your steering compass is to place a cell phone, hand held GPS, or Handheld VHF in a holder next to it. much more extreme errors than a can of drink!
