Interesting, wonder if the same is required for passenger (i.e. cruise) ships? I wrote to the Marketing Director of one of the lines and asked if he could find out what their policy was on that, but never heard back (he probably didn't understand the question... ;-)). Yes. All MM officers who are rated for any "Oceans" endorsement on their ticket have to be tested in and found proficient in 3 extra areas not included in any NC license. The areas are: 1. Radar Observer 2. Advanced Marine Firefighting 3. Celestial Navigation This includes any ticket for any gross tonnage vessel of any kind. The only difference in the written and proficiency tests between tonnages of vessel the officer is going for are some of the more archaic CelNav subjects covered for the higher (especially 1300 GT vessels and up) Oceans Endorsements. Of the three subjects covered for a modern Oceans Endorsement the CN portion is the least important of the three. The Advanced Firefighting (techniques and firefighting management) and the Radar Observer (especially the "unlimited" tonnage rating) are much more important to a modern MM Officer to have a very firm theoretical and practical understanding of. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ Navigation List archive: www.fer3.com/arc To post, email NavList@fer3.com To , email NavList-@fer3.com -~----------~----~----~----~------~----~------~--~---
