Thank you for all your comments. I found it most useful. It seems my classic Silva TD Ranger - trusty servant through the years- has been overtaken by technology. (Nevertheless I am not about to retire it.) I received this very kind reply from Silva in regard to my question: Dear Sir, Your compass is balanced for MS (magnetic south) and for use in Canada you should have MN (magnetic north). If you are aware of this fact it should be able to use as the needle points north but it is not at all to recommend. You should buy a compass in Canada which is balanced for MN. Please note that compasses manufactured by Silva in Sweden is sold under the Brunton brandname in Canada. Just out of curiosity I would like to know if you are using skins and alpine skis with special bindings when back country skiing in Whistler or cross country skis. I am personally an avid back country skier and some day I will go to Canada skiing. Best regards Goran Andersson Silva Sweden AB Sure enough I checked the underside of the baseplate and there was the inscription MS-0 so it is possible to tell on a hand held compass- even an old one- what part of the world it is useful in.
