Your two step approach is excellent : first compute the time of CPA and then get the coordinates from CPA time.
I should have been more explicit in my last post, i.e. I should have written that finding the absolute minimum distance between any two points of any two different lines in space is not a trivial task, unless you perform it through successive iterations. I have to admit that this is not exactly the matter addressed in our CPA drill, but it is somewhat related to it.
