Re: Cleaning arc of Vernier sextant.

    Dear George,
    > Alex has it right. This morning, I drove to Bristol to collect my
    > Vernier sextant.
I know the story from the seller:-)
The picture of the arc was fuzzy, and I asked him to send me another
picture. He replied that he cannot make a better one,
but "an expert in the antique sextants visited him on Friday,
driving 100 miles, and said that
this was the best arc on an old sextant he's seen so far":-)
I replied that I take his word of a
"blue water sailor" that the arc and vernier are readable.
After the end of the auction, when the "reserve was not met"
I contacted him by e-mail, asking what his price was,
but he replied that the sextant has been sold few minutes ago.
And then came your message asking how to clean the arc:-)
    > I wonder if Alex was aware of another sextant on eBay.co.uk for which,
    > by sheer chance, the auction ended just an hour later.
Yes, I was looking at that other one too, it seemed more complete
(had eyepiece filters; they are missing in your sextant)
but the arc is not so good, (according to the certificate which shows
    arc errors up to 30")
    and the frame
    has more corrosion,
and the adjusting wrench is missing...
So I will wait for another one. It is a hard business because the
sellers rarely show adequate pictures of the most important points:
the arc, vernier, mirrors and filters. But a similar sextant in a
regular shop (with a return policy) costs
$1500 (West Sea)-$2500 (Land and Sea). So, congratulations again.
