An affordable mechanical wrist watch has been found that will I think meet the minimum celestial navigation needs of the 2018 Golden Globe Race participants. The Orient Ray II automatic divers watch ( $150 new on ebay ) can be hand wound and hacked. The Japanese made movement will keep very consistent time as long as the watch is worn on the wrist or kept in a pocket to maintain a stable temperature.
I own a less expensive Orient Flight watch which is non- hacking and keeps consistent time at -2.5 sec/day which I'm very happy with in a mechanical watch.
