    Checking index error

For this reason alone I use celestial bodies (usually the sun) to check my index error after the rare corrections i make to the sextant.

To answer another question on a recent thread, the index error has been basically constant on the ship's metal sextant for over 2 years.

Thanks for the references you included below. Something else to consider, though it does explain what I believe are the significant differrences I've noticed between checking IE against a sea horizon at the beach, where distance is measureed in miles, as opposed to viewing terrestrial objects, the roof line of a building whose distance would be measured in yards.

If is isn't one thing, it's another, isn't it.
