    Herbert.

Thank you for your input - your opinions are always measured and balanced. By "unabridged and uneditorialized"  I simply meant unchanged by me to make a point.
My issue in this matter is Frank's apparent predeliction to introduce issues into a discussion which are irrelevant, i.e., "jousting with windmills". I certainly never did, nor to the best of my recollection did George or anyone else in recent memory, claim that Bro. Chauvenet was a practical navigator - he wasn't and that's that, so why the rant?  Methinks that, if we throw out any opinion not originating from a "practical navigator" this List would become pretty barren.

Regardless of your opinion regarding the St. Andrews website, can you address any errors in the article that I posted therefrom, which I believe covers several points not mentioned in the previous posts.

    Regards,

    Henry

    Henry,

I find it ironic that you call the text that you attached to your last message "unabridged" and "uneditorialized". In fact, it is an abridged, highly edited and dumbed down rehash of Zund's article on Chauvenet in the American National Biography. I must say that the St. Andrews website is not my first choice when I look for a biography. The articles are badly written, often inaccurate and sometimes plagiary. It does not help that the editors of the website ignore corrections of factual errors when they are sent to them.

Attached please find a balanced, unabridged, uneditorialized and unbiased version of the subject's accomplishments. BTW, I do not recall anyone claiming the subject to have been an experienced practical navigator - many of the Epitome writers were not.
