ChatGPT taking over management of NavList

No, not really. That's a clickbait subject line. But you may enjoy this post anyway. :)

A few minutes ago, I said to the Oracle of Digitalia, "ChatGPT, tell me about the NavList community." Here's how it replied:

The NavList community is a group of individuals who share a common interest in navigation, especially celestial navigation, and related topics such as astronomy, history, and marine culture. NavList was founded in 2007 [no, not really] as an email-based discussion group, and has since grown to become a thriving online community with over 4,000 members [wow! definitely not] from all over the world.
NavList members include amateur and professional navigators, sailors, pilots, historians, scientists, and enthusiasts who are passionate about the art and science of navigation. The community is known for its friendly and supportive atmosphere, and for its dedication to sharing knowledge and helping others learn [apart from its other properties, ChatGPT is an accomplished flirt].
NavList is hosted and maintained by Frank Reed, an experienced navigator and author [Ooo, author?! I should read some of my books one of these days], and the community is supported by a team of volunteers who help moderate discussions and maintain the website [I look forward to meeting some of these volunteers who help maintain the website]. NavList members engage in lively discussions on a wide range of topics related to navigation, share advice and tips, ask and answer questions, and participate in occasional challenges and exercises to hone their navigation skills [as a summary, that's not bad!].

I then asked it to "tell me more about the NavList community." Here is where it showed its true colors. It's the same content, spun around and re-formatted:

Sure! The NavList community is an online forum for discussion and learning about navigation, particularly traditional and celestial navigation. Here are some additional details about the community:

    • History: NavList was founded in 2007 by Frank Reed, an experienced navigator and author. The community started as an email-based discussion group, and later expanded to include a website and online forum.
    • Membership: NavList has over 4,000 members from around the world, including both amateur and professional navigators, sailors, pilots, historians, scientists, and enthusiasts.
    • Topics: NavList discussions cover a wide range of topics related to navigation, including traditional and celestial navigation techniques, tools and equipment, history and culture of navigation, and more. Members share advice, ask and answer questions, and participate in occasional challenges and exercises to test their skills.
    • Community culture: NavList is known for its supportive and welcoming culture, where members are encouraged to share knowledge and help each other learn. The community is moderated by a team of volunteers who ensure that discussions stay on topic and respectful.
    • Resources: In addition to the online forum, NavList offers a variety of resources for navigation enthusiasts, including articles, videos, and links to other useful websites and resources.

Overall, the NavList community is a valuable resource for anyone interested in traditional and celestial navigation, with a wealth of knowledge and experience to share.
