As to mechanical pencils, so-called, and their making holes in one's shirt pockets, do you remember pocket protectors?
They likely aren't made these days, but they did work, that is they saved one's shirt pockets.
I had/have a bunch of machanical pencils in various diameters. My favorites were a set of 3, labeled Alvin. I don't know who made them, but they came in .5mm, .7mm and .9mm size, in a "leather" scabbard type case.
As you said, there are a bunch of them out there.
