Alex, you wrote: "Simms (of the famous Troghton and Simms) wrote several papers and a book where this is the main subject. This was in the late 1850-s." Did you know you can download the whole book from Google Books? It provides extensive details on arc error measurement and correction. To find it, go here: http://books.google.com/advanced_book_search and search on 'Simms' and 'sextant' setting the maximum publication date to '1900' (e.g.). This will return "The Sextant and its Applications" by Simms from 1858 as the top result. You may notice that the paper by E.J. White also turns up further down in the search results. -FER --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ To post to this group, send email to NavList@fer3.com To , send email to NavList-@fer3.com -~----------~----~----~----~------~----~------~--~---
