Similar types of trigonometric tricks to those that form the basis of prosthaphaeresis seem to have persisted even after the advent of logarithms. As noted here http://fer3.com/arc/m2.aspx/Reduction-occultation-stars-Stuart-jan-2018-g41143 Chauvenet uses them to solve a quadratic equation associated with the reduction of occultations using Bessel's method. This makes it quite a bit more difficult to understand what is actually going on.
