Celestial Navigation on the Great Lakes Question

My Grandfather served on US Steel Ships for 40 years starting in the 20's, ultimately becoming a staff Captain and St. Lawrence Seaway Pilot in the 60's.
My interest in CN matured after he had passed so I never got to ask him about navigation on the Great Lakes in his day.
Does anyone know what methods of navigation they used in the 20's? 30's? etc. Was CN used?
Was it Radio Direction Finding prior to Loran etc?
