A famous contemporary mathematician said: "All mathematics is divided into three parts: cryptography (paid for by CIA, KGB and the like), hydrodynamics (supported by manufacturers of atomic submarines) and celestial mechanics (financed by military and other institutions dealing with missiles, such as NASA)." Then he explains very convincingly how all present areas of "pure mathematics" have their origin in these three major areas of "applied mathematics". Algebra from cryptography, Analysis from celestial mechanics etc. And this was always so, beginning from Archimedes:-) Substitute the Longitude prize for NASA in XVIII century:-) Alex.
