    The 5200 and 4200 3M line is Polyurethane and does not like ABS but would
    like your boat's fiberglass a ton.  A silicone sealant should not have a
    problem with ABS and should give you all the structural integrity you need
    for a foam post.

    If going wood or something like it, then I would consider an ABS pad mounted
    to the wood with flat-head countersunk screws, then adhere that pad to the
    lid with ABS cement.

    You are right, some things just don't mix.  FRP resin on Urethane foam, no
    problem if I recall.  The running joke in my DOD product development lab at
    UniRoyal was to hand the new college-kid summer help a Styrofoam coffee cup
    and send him over to get a cup full of MEK.  I swear, that stuff never
    settled in the bottom of the cup as I recall, it passed straight through. I
    stood there like a deer in headlights. <g>
