I'm pretty sure the smaller item is a sun dial.  The reason is, I bought one of these.  It was so unuseable that I found an excuse, of which there were many, and sent it back.  A box sextant would have had a brass drum outer cover and a brass drum inner cover over the mirrors.  I also bought one of these.  That too was highly inaccurate, but I kept it to show an example of what Chichester was probably using flying from New Zealand to Australia.  His would have been a real one. Currently advertised examples are:
    Sun Dial. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/252694084703
