    Frank,

            The article also contains a picture of the lunar distance table from the Nautical Almanac of 1769 with the caption "This page from the Nautical Almanac shows lunar distances for January 1769 as they would appear to an observer in Greenwich, England" so I think it's a bit more than just a matter of murky prose,
