    Re: Calculators "old technology"

Funny this topic should come up!  When I got an iPad several years ago, I was bummed that it did not come with a built-in calculator app (as does the iPhone and most desktop operating systems).

I didn't want to pay for such an app, and I did not like all the pop-up ads that come with the free calculator apps out there. So I wrote my own in Javascript and put it on my website: http://carpathiapress.com/Calc.htm  My iPad now has an icon on the home screen that links to it directly. The app even includes haversine and archav keys for CelNav.

One feature I appreciate is that it retains a sequence of +-*/ operations on the display, allowing easy proofreading before I hit the = key. There are a few idiosyncrasies to be aware of. The function keys don't work on a sequence, but only when the display shows a single result. Also, when entering a negative number, the negative sign in the lower-left corner  is to be pressed AHEAD of the digits (just as we do when writing on a pencil and paper).
