    Well put, Francis!

    We have people in this group who eschew calculators and Law of Cosines sight reduction (or GPS) because "electronics are unreliable."  While it's certainly true that a sextant is probably "more reliable" (ie, has fewer possible failure modes) than electronics, one can certainly question the "reliability" of non-electronic sight reduction techniques.

    Great news re the seaworthiness of a calculator! ( and by extrapolation, maybe other electronic wonders?)I wonder how paper almanacs, log/trig  tables and the like would fare after 30 minutes drowning? I may dunk my 2013 almanac and see.
