Alex,
I have never trusted checkin luggage for sextant transport. Better to double box then FedEx before the flight. I now have a very rugged aftermarket sextant box made by Seahorse which is sized right for both my Plath and Tamaya (see IMG 3405). With this box I am confident against damage even if dropped from the overhead bin.
No GPS :( What is your back-up then ? :)

I suppose it is free: it has a battery ilumination.
(There is a bubble camera with a liquid, of course).
My main concern was not taking shots from an airplane with a bubble
sextant (though this is an interesting ides) but transporting my
ordinary marine sextant when I travel. I used to pack it carefully
and check in to the luggage. But since my friend had his
binocular in a checked in siutcase
disassembled by some security in Germany, I do not do this anymore.

What do you mean "4nm from GPS" ? I never owned a GPS but I suppose it is
much more accurate than 4 nm.
Alex.
