    Alex:

From personal experiece, shooting the sun off the beach, sometimes results in interesting conversations.

One time a young man approached me, asking which brand of sextant I was using. When I said mine wss an Astra 111B, he chuckled, noting that he had used them "at school". When I asked was that Kings Point, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, he was surprised that I knew about the place. Matter of fact, a since departed old friend of mine had been a ships master, who had graduated from Kings Point many years ago. This man, ad a friend of his had gone from "Kings Point" to the U.S. Marine Corps, possibly having failed to gain admittancse to the U.S. Naval Academy. When asked if I was a "professional navigator", I answered NO, just following a hobby interest.

Often, people ask what sort of camera I was using, and one lady looked askance, she having asked what sort of device I was using, I having told her, "a sextant". Some people express amzement at anyone still usinhg a sextant to determine their location, some people are genually interested, some are simply curious. Some cannot believe that one can actually determine where on earth they are through simply determining the altitude of the sun. When one explains the process, some look on with glazed eyes, some appear to actually understand, some act as if finding ones location absent electronic marvels is tantamount to "pulling many large rabits out of a small cap". Funy, isn't?

As for myself, I suppose that I know just enough about celestial navigation to get into trouble, maybe enough to get out of trouble too, but it is interesting, and sometimes one gets to ogle those pretty young things in their skimpy bikinis, a sport that "dirty old men" such as I enjoy.

    Alan
