Byron: I was in the US. Navy 1948 to1952 than 1954 to 1978, After 1978 I was well known to the head Navigation guy, Mr. Ernest Brown the head of Navigation at HO. He was the guy that was in charge of the HO Navigation and the rewriter of the Bowditch and other Navigation Publication. , .while I taught Navigation at Offers Candidate School Newport RI. I wrote to the Hydrograph Office about my technique of finding compass error. I didnt say that I was in the Navy. Mr. Brown looked in Navy records because he thought I must be Navy because, no one else would be concern with correcting compass error while piloting.
Mr. Brown soon learned that I was an instructor at Officer Candidate School Newport. Earlier Mr. Brown was the Navigator on a ship that had gyro troubles during WW2 He said he stayed up all night reading my paper on how to correct compass error He said, he tried to make it not work. He wrote to me saying it was the most important evaluation that he received. His job was to evaluate and write for the Hydrograph Office and Bowditch and other government Navigation Manuals. After I was transferred to the Intrepid from OCS I became his at sea evaluator. His job at HO did not allow him to go to sea to evaluate Navigation Ideas. I had the time <always at sea to develop and evaluate new Ideas.
I would like to see in Navlist, others and their experience. It may add to Knowledge.
