I am seriously thinking about making a version of the Flat Bygrave, however I am unsure about the range of angles on both scales. My version is supposed to be usable to latitudes of +/- 70 deg or thereabouts, and is meant for blue water sailingon a 40' boat. My ambition is sight reduction to < +/- 1 sm throughout.

This might have been discussed before here but I would like to probe the minds of you Bygrave afficionados - particularly those with practical experience ( Gary LaPook? ). I am certainly aware of the trade-offs but I wouldn't know how to weigh them properly for practical applications since I have no such experience.

First interviews with active sailors indicate they are less sensitive to size than on handling, readability and dependability. I expect this will have an influence on the answer to the question.

Gentlemen, what are your latest thoughts about this?
