Many of you probably keep a good eye on e-bay, and must see the constant listing of reproduction sextants. Now I know they are not certified instruments, but how bad are they? My reason for an interest in them is the originals that they represent are rare and expensive. Even if I had limitless cash, no one is making anything but standard sextants any more. I would love a working Small Craft Precision Sextant by Francis Barker and Son, or a good pocket sextant, but might have a look at the Ross of London, or Stanley reproductions. The 3 inch brass box sextant looks interesting, and the smaller pocket sextants are a good size too. Has anyone ever tried any of these reproductions? I find that in these days of mass CNC machining that even cheap items can be quite well made. I have had lots of great suggestions before from the list members, and I have time on my side as I am not suddenly going to ship out, although I still have my discharge book. I keep a constant eye on e-bay, and even picked up a working ASTROCOMPASS MK II for a ridiculously low price so I know there is always hope. A friend is going to lend me a theodolite; so I am going to give that a go as well. I have come to the conclusion that an artificial horizon is just not good for stars in a city unless I use mercury, and I don't want to go there. I am looking for a cheapish silver surfaced mirror, but I might make one if I find the time. In the mean time, I search e-bay and hope.
