    Perhaps I am misunderstanding, but from Alex's wording he seems to be
    implying that he expects a back sight to be found on all such
    octants/quadrants.
    
    This is far from being the case. Many (in fact I would guess most) such
    instruments were made for measuring 0 to 90 degrees only, and were not
    adapted for backsight use.
