Google offers a free email account, with 1GByte of storage space. They're promoting it by word of mouth, so the only way to sign up is via invitation from someone who has one. Since there's loads of space, you don't have to worry about it filling up with junk while you're away. Since it's free, there are Google ads on the right side of the browser window. They don't waste enough bandwidth to bother me, even on dialup. They make a big deal about being able to use their tools to search your email, which requires that you leave your mail on their server, but there's pop and imap if you want to keep a local copy. I have 10 gmail invitations, so if anyone wants to try it out, email me (maybe off list? this is getting off topic) and I'll send you one.
