Eureka! A collegue on the CPS-ECP Discussion Forums scanned the relevant pages for me from a 1970's Bowditch. It is a gold mine of revelation. All that useful preamble has been removed from the current 2002 Bowditch, leaving such limited and garbled information that I could not begin to untangle the point of Table 15 on my own. 1. Figure 1203a in the 1970's Bowditch shows that D is the distance over the curve of the earth from the ship's waterline to the object's sea level, perpendicular from the top of the object. Done. 2. That edition also gives specific step-by-step examples for how to use the table. 3. The forumla used to generate Table 15 (9) was derived in this article: Guier, William. Note on Determining Range from Sextant Altitude. Journal of Institute of Navigation, Washington, D.C., USA. Vol. 4, Winter 1968-69:366-375. Table 9 was a modification of tables provided in that article. Can anyone obtain Guier's article for me? I would love to read it. I shall revise my webpage accordingly. Thank you all, for your patience and guidance. Jim Thompson jim2@jimthompson.net www.jimthompson.net -------------------- Outgoing email scanned by Norton Antivirus
