Because those are the standards, Mike. Acrobat is designed for "universal" portability across platforms and users, and choosing to retain compatibility with old verions sacrifices NOTHING for these types of files. In addition, many users--like myself--own the full Acrobat Distiller package and are not about to pay for the upgrades to v.5, which unlike the "Acrobat Reader" are not free. Look at it the other way around: Why should a million users upgrade for no reason, when somebody just has to select "3.0/4.0 Compatibility" in their setup options ONCE in order to make files that way? NIMA apparently made over 30 chapters available in the proper format (compatible) and they simply "must" have had one guy doing part of the work who was set up wrong.
