Bob James, just wrote a marvelous little book on the history of the big dipper: "Humanity and the Big Dipper: A History of Our Species in Relation to Seven Stars". It came out earlier this year and is on Amazon. Though aimed at a general audience, it has a few nice nav-related anecdotes. At minimum I figure anyone who has to talk to the public about navigation, etc will likely find it chock full of cool anecdotes.
Oh, and by the way, he also recently wrote a cool paper on the history of actual/fictional calculators in the golden age of science fiction. Off-topic, except that I know many folks in this group are calculator-heads as well. ;-)
