Hello Richard, and welcome aboard.
Brad Morris' suggestion to start with the sextant is a good one. It's where I start when I teach the subject.
Attached is an essay about celestial I send to potential students to give them an overview of the subject and a general idea of what to expect in class. Learning celestial is not all that easy, nor is it all that hard.
