    Hello David Pike,

I am happy you found it interesting. I like the fact you used spherical trig and unfortunately its not the method the professor is looking for even if used, it would make life a lot easier in an exam. As for the 30' for the upper limb I enjoyed the old 'gotcha' moment myself but it came a lot slower then yours. I can only say that an ocean navigator would have also approached this differently, but that takes some of the fun out of the question I guess.
I'm not going to lie to you and pretend I'm not a novice, but I did have to look up what kind of sextant a bubble sextant was and watched a 55' video on youtube explaining how to navigate with one.
Regarding the cruise industry, I can only hope but there is word of our fleet decreasing to 30% once restrictions are lifted. So its a bit hard to tell at the moment.  Thank you for your concern, its much appreciated.

(Sorry tried looking you up also but there are a lot of David Pikes.)

    Kind regards,
    Grace.

    Alan,

As to where I have studied Celestial Navigation, my University and I are located in Europe and I am not as lucky as to find the likes of Power Squadron located near me. However if you find that what I have done is wrong, I welcome you to show me the correct way of answering the question. I can send you a copy of the 1996 Almanac in a link if it will help. If not, thank you for the advise.

As of my sextant, thank you for the concern, but it is always clean and lightly oiled.

    kind regards,
    Grace.

I have no idea as to where you studied Celestial Navigation, to whatever extent you might have "studied it." Might I suggest the following. If there is a Power Squadron chapter conveniently located to you, check to see what there schedule of classes is. It might prove helpfull. Keep your sextant clean, lightly oiled.
