One thing for all to recognize is that the Davis sextants have been in production for around 20 years. Therefore it is not at all surprising that different examples of exactly the same model but produced at different times might behave differently. For example, I have a Davis Mark 20. This no-longer-produced model is basically a Mark 15 with illumination for the readout. I have never had trouble with the sun shades such as Herbert Prinz mentions. I'm not at all disputing him or his experience, just trying to point out that on a model produced over such a long period of time and therefore doubtlessly by several contract manufacturers variations in quality and behavior may occur.
