Hewitt: yes I have read eight or ten novels by O'Brian. I have quoted Master and Commander for the film, several friends of mine have known O'Brian through it.

George Huxtable: I know the film “Captain Horatio Hornblower” with Gregory Peck, but no Forester's novels. I am going to put these in my list.

    Thanks to all.

    Andrés,

Here's one that might not be on everyone's list:  Carry on, Mr. Bowditch by Jean Lee Latham.
It is a children's book (I would guess aimed at about 5th grade).  One the Newberry in 1956.  Delightful fictionalized account of the life and career of Nathaniel Bowditch.

In line with the historical accounts, I am interested in authors of novels about the sea in past ages.
I have read books by Patrick O'Brian (Aubrey & Maturin, Master & Commander) and Alexander Kent (Richard Bolitho). Any review to other novels will be welcomed.
