Rob, I have a Ball Recording Sextant in mint condition. And I have the manual which I will scan in sometime this week and send it to you in a PM. It will likely be quite a large file so if it is not e-mailable, I may have to burn a CD and snail mail it to you. The purpose of the scale is explained in the manual as well as the theory of operation and use. You can use ordinary carbon paper in lieu of having whatever was originally provided. And the manual is very polite with respect to where you insert the carbon paper ;-) Give me a day or so and I will shoot this stuff over your way. By the way, these birds are rare. I believe that only a hundred or less were made. I have the actual figure somewhere but cannot lay my hands on it. The sextant is discussed in Ifland's "Taking the Stars". As you might guess, they did not work out as originally anticipated.
