Welcome aboard. There is no formal initiation process or secret handshake to learn.
Mr Gary LaPook has set up, in his back yard, exactly what you seem to want to do. That is, hang a periscopic sextant, supply it with power and take observations. I'm 100% convinced that Gary will jump in shortly.
