Jeremy,
I mistakenly worked out your 101* 35.1' observation as a dip short rather than a natural horizon which explains the 20' difference I was getting (dip 9.6' vs. dip short 30.8'). Having the natural horizon available along with the dip short horizon is a neat way to check the dip short horizon distance estimation. Simultaneously combining the backsight with a conventional sight would further add a check on the index/personal error value.
