Suggest read "Maskelyne, Ed Revecca Higgett.2014 and his own "British Mariners guide 1763, in particular his voyage back from St Helena. Using lunars, (probably the first to do that)he was pretty well the only person on board who knew where he was, especially longitude. Seems like a pretty good navigator to me. Others on board may have been great "navigators" in the traditional sense, but had no idea where they were.(especially longitude). I'm a great fan of Maskelyne who has been much maligned.
