Automatic deviation calculation by electronic compasses

Lunav, you're right. That's what I'd do if I was only working an autopilot -
only worry about the transients. I was thinking of the new (to me) sensors
with the standardized NMEA/ISO signal output. You know the sailor's dream is
an integrated chart plotter (regardless of what they say here), and it isn't
a problem to use one sensor through a junction box. Then, as long as we're
at it, we'll put a remote heading display at the bunk (just like a real
ship's captain) and maybe another in the head. And on and on.... ...until
the wife makes a pre-emptive strike and puts the catalog away.
